" ... erguia-se em anfiteatro, no seu esplendor de cidade asiática, com as fachadas árabes dos palácios a rebrilhar ao sol quase tropical, com os seus eirados e minaretes, as ruas pejadas de bazares, e, em baixo e ao redor, os pomares viçosos de amendoeiras, laranjeiras e figueiras, e no cimo, recortando-se no fundo azulado da serrania, o alcácer de pedra ruiva, assente em terreno escarpado e encimado pelo torreão grande... "

Silves, there it was!
" ... stretching over the hill, in amphitheatre, wrapped in the splendour of an Asian city, with its terraces, minarets, the façade of the Arabic palaces shining under the light of an almost tropical sun and the streets replete with bazaars. On top, outlined against the bluish background of the mountain, standing on the slope, was the Alcácer of red sandstone crowned by the main tower. At the foot of the hill spreading around the city we could see flourishing orchards of almond, orange and fig trees... "

Assim viu Silves o Cruzado que narrou os episódios da sua conquista em 1189.
Hoje em dia, chegando a Silves pelo Sul, vindo do litoral, e porque não mesmo vindo de poente, subindo o rio, como fizeram os Cruzados, com o devido ajuste ao passar dos tempos e das civilizações, não nos será difícil ficar de novo deslumbrados, como o Cruzado de há oitocentos anos atrás.
Seja como for que chegue a Silves, aproxime-se do rio.
Tome como referência a Ponte Velha.

This was how the Cruzado de Silves (Silves Cruzader) who told us about Silves conquest in 1189 saw it.
Nowadays you can’t expect to observe the scenery the cruzaders contemplated when they came sailing up the river from the west and besieged the city. But either arriving here as they did or coming from the southern coast, it is easy to experience the fascination they felt 800 years ago.
Anyway, once here go straight to the river and take as your reference point Ponte Velha (Old Bridge).

À sua frente deve avistar as " Casas Grandes " e a grande janela central, sobre a porta.

Across the square you’ll see "Casas Grandes" with its large window in the center, above the main door.

Caminhe pela esquerda.
Se for de manhã, poderá visitar o Mercado Municipal e deliciar-se com as frutas, as hortaliças, o peixe fresco... e a tipicidade destes locais públicos de venda de víveres, com a agitação e o bulício próprios destas terras do Sul e do Sol.
Procure agora a rua José Estêvão, que se situa junta à porta do Mercado do lado Nascente. Siga a rua, observando os edifícios "oitocentistas" que marcam o início da era industrial em Silves (cortiça). Tome a rua 5 de Outubro e suba-a até ao Largo do Município.

Turn left.
Start by visiting the Market in the morning and enjoy the sight and the smell of the fruits, vegetables, fresh fish and all that’s typical about these crowded, noisy, southern, sunny places where you can buy everything you need to cook a delicious meal.
Look then for José Estêvão Street, near the eastern door of the Market. Walk along the street watching the 19th century buildings from the beginning of the industrial age in Silves (cork processing). Follow 5 de Outubro Street and climb it until Largo do Município.

Aí poderá observar a presença de três importantes símbolos do poder local: as Portas da Cidade, o Pelourinho, e o edifício dos Paços do Concelho, sendo o primeiro e o último sedes, respectivamente, da antiga e da actual Câmara Municipal.

There you can watch three important symbols of local power: the Town Gate, the Pillory and the City Hall, the first and the last being the seat of the old and modern City Hall.

Passe o arco sob o Torreão das Portas da Cidade e siga pela sua direita.
Alguns passos em frente e estará diante do Museu Municipal de Arqueologia, que alberga no seu interior uma das mais notáveis e recentes descobertas arqueológicas - um Poço-Cisterna do séc. XII.

Walk under the Tower of the Town Gate and turn right.
Shortly you’ll be in front of the Municipal Archeological Museum, which houses one of the most remarkable and recent archeological finds - a Well-Cistern - dating back to the 12th century.

Quando sair do Museu vire à direita e tome a rua imediatamente à sua esquerda.
Irá desembocar no Largo D. Jerónimo Osório, o último bispo de Silves, e avistará, um pouco mais à frente, à sua esquerda a Igreja da Misericórdia e a sua curiosa Porta Manuelina, e à sua direita a antiga Sé Catedral.

As you leave the Museum, turn right and follow the street immediatly on your left which leads to Largo D. Jerónimo Osório, named according to the last bishop who presided over the Silves diocese before it was moved to Faro. Close by you’ll see, on the left Igreja da Misericórdia and its unique Manueline Door, and on the right the old Cathedral.

Depois da visita, contorne a Sé Catedral e admire o exterior da sua ábside.
Avistará o Castelo.
Suba em sua direcção. Visite-o e utilize-o como miradouro sobre a cidade.

After the visit stroll around and take your time to admire the abside from the outside.
And then you’ll see the Castle.
Walk up towards it. Wander around and use it as a belvedere onto the city.

À saída do Castelo desça a escadaria à sua esquerda.
Ao fundo tome de novo a esquerda e desça a rua do Castelo, contornando a zona amuralhada e ajardinada, descendo então as Escadas de Diogo Manuel, que conduzem à rua Cândido dos Reis. Defronte, o antigo Teatro Mascarenhas Gregório.

Upon leaving the Castle go down the stairway and turn left.
Turn left once again down Castelo Street, walk along the wall which surrounds a gardenlike area down Diogo Manuel Stairway and you’ll find yourself in Cândido dos Reis Street. In front of you stands Mascarenhas Gregório Theatre.

A rua Cândido dos Reis prolonga-se para Nascente ao longo de todos esses edifícios "novecentistas", contemporâneos da então florescente indústria corticeira. Percorrendo alguns metros encontrará um empreendimento de cultura e lazer que recuperou uma das grandes fábricas de cortiça dessa época - A "Fábrica do Inglês" -, onde terá oportunidade de visitar o Museu da Cortiça.

Cândido dos Reis Street goes eastwards and is lined by the early 20th century buildings contemporary of the flourishing cork industry. Also from that time is "Fábrica do Inglês", a former cork factory that was recently restored and turned into a cultural and leisure center, where you can visit the Cork Museum.

Depois desta visita pode prosseguir para Nascente até à Cruz de Portugal. Aconselhamo-lo, no entanto, a visitar este cruzeiro mais tarde, prosseguindo agora no sentido do Poente, onde irá fechar o círculo desta visita no Largo do Município.

After this visit you can go eastwards again until you find Crucifix of Portugal. But take our advice: admire the Crucifix later. Keep on going, this time westwards and you’ll close the circle in Largo do Município.

Restam-lhe dois monumentos para visitar: a Cruz de Portugal, a Nascente, (se ainda não o fez) e a Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, a Poente.

You've left two monuments behind: The Crucifix of Portugal, on the East, and Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires, on the West.

Convém ainda fruir um pouco os agradáveis espaços públicos que a cidade tem para lhe oferecer: jardins, largos, vistas, sombras, e até os seus cafés, restaurantes e bares.
Fique para a noite.
Chegou a hora de visitar a Cruz de Portugal e a Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires. Num calmo passeio, a pé ou na sua viatura, visite o que lhe resta da antiga Silves. Há uma estrada por trás dos muros que liga esses dois monumentos e, se seguiu o nosso conselho de ficar para a noite, terá o privilégio de gozar a bela iluminação do Castelo, pelo lado Norte da muralha.

Now relax and find the time to enjoy the pleasant squares, gardens, the astonishing views, shadows, cafés, restaurants and bars.
Stay the night.
Now it's the time to visit The Crucifix of Portugal and Igreja de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires. Take a walk through what is left. There’s a road behind the Wall which surrounds the ancient part of the city and, if you take our advice, you’ll be privileged to contemplate the illuminated northern Wall of the Castle.
